John GrilloThe beginning of Abstract Expressionism
Dates not published Mill Valley
Paintings from the 1940s by John Grillo, made in San Francisco, from the artist’s estate.
The show presents John Grillo’s work from the 1940s, drawn from his estate. The gallery quotes art historian Susan Landauer, who argues that his gestural paintings of the San Francisco years paralleled and in some cases anticipated the New York painters.
She notes that his spontaneous, dramatic canvases came before Kline’s move into abstraction and de Kooning’s first solo show.
