Mariana VarelaPueblo Fantasma

Public Land Store & Gallery

Oct 3 – Nov 29, 2026 Inner Richmond

Ceramic sculpture, installation and black-and-white film photographs drawn from Mexico City’s Mercado de Jamaica around Día de Muertos.

Varela reinterprets what she saw at Mercado de Jamaica, where flowers, food and everyday goods fill the stalls and ceremony mixes with daily life. Bottles and cans are remade as sculpture, floral and animal forms echo the market’s arrangements, and ghostly figures in ordinary scenes suggest people who are gone.

It is the Mexican, San Francisco-based artist’s first solo exhibition in the United States.
