A new video of trans* community members and hand-imprinted ceramic tiles recording historic religious floor plans, built into a devotional installation.
Weefur’s installation treats the trans* body as a site of devotion, centered on On Devotion, a newly commissioned video gathering trans* community members, including historian Susan Stryker, around everyday acts framed as spiritual practice. An accompanying archive of ceramic tiles, hand-imprinted with the floor plans of centuries-old religious buildings, lines the space.
The work builds on Jack Halberstam’s idea of “trans* anarchitecture,” linking trans bodies’ remaking of gender to Gordon Matta-Clark’s cutting into buildings. A prototype of the installation was first shown at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts as part of Bay Area Now 9.
