Wendy ClarkeThe Prison Tapes (1979–2002)

Cushion Works

Sep 27 – Nov 14, 2026 Mission

Video works made with incarcerated men and women across two decades, from a New York jail in 1979 to California prisons into the 2000s.

Clarke worked as an artist in residence in New York and California prisons, treating willing participants as collaborators and artists rather than subjects. The tapes gathered here include Prison Love Tapes, in which inmates at a Manhattan jail speak about love; Amen, memories recalled by men in a prison HIV/AIDS unit; One on One, video pen-pal exchanges between inmates and outside collaborators; Videomasks; and Inside Out, diaries by young women at a California youth facility.

Though portions have screened before, this marks the first time the body of work has been brought together in exhibition form. Cushion Works will also host a live event with Clarke during the run.
