Cy TwomblySperlonga 1959
Sep 12 – Nov 10, 2026 Marais
Drawings Twombly made in the summer of 1959, soon after settling in Italy, while staying in Sperlonga, a coastal village between Rome and Naples.
That summer Twombly made about thirty works on paper, and the show brings together a group of them. The glare of the sea and the nearby villa of Tiberius, where first-century sculptures of scenes from the Odyssey had been found in 1957, fed into sheets that suggest a horizon with a few lines, numbers, circles and dabs of paint across mostly bare paper.
The series opened up landscape as a subject for the rest of his career. Karsten Greve first showed Twombly in 1971.
