Cezanne et nous

Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Piet Mondrian, Joan Mitchell, Bridget Riley, Peter Doig and others

Grand Palais – Galeries nationales

Sep 23, 2026 – Jan 17, 2027 Champs-Élysées

Nearly 180 works tracing how Cezanne’s painting was discovered, absorbed and argued over by artists from Gauguin and Matisse to Joan Mitchell and Peter Doig.

The show tells two stories at once: Cezanne’s influence on modern art, and the artists who claimed him as a forebear. It begins in the late 1880s, when painters and collectors first saw his canvases in Père Tanguy’s shop, and passes through Vollard’s early solo shows and the 1907 Salon d’Automne.

Works by Gauguin, Matisse, Picasso, Mondrian, Mitchell, Bridget Riley and Doig follow his legacy through lyrical and geometric abstraction and hard-edge painting to the present. It is co-produced with the Centre Pompidou and the Musée d’Orsay.
