Two-person exhibition
La sculpture pure
Aristide Maillol, Manolo
About forty bronzes, terracottas and drawings by Aristide Maillol and Manolo, both built around the female nude and a classical Mediterranean ideal.
Closing a tour that began in Madrid and continued in Barcelona, the show pairs sculptures and drawings by Maillol (1861–1944) and his younger friend Manolo Hugué (1872–1945) for the first time. The two met in the 1910s and, during the First World War, worked a few miles apart in the Pyrénées-Orientales — Maillol in Banyuls-sur-Mer, Manolo in Céret — sharing a Mediterranean landscape and friends such as the poet Pierre Camo.
Both grounded their work in the human body and in the balance and simplicity of archaic Greek sculpture, yet arrived at different results: Maillol’s nudes in bronze, terracotta and lead are sensual and monumental, while Manolo’s figures, worked in clay, plaster and ink, are looser and more expressive.
