Didier Amblard, Jacqueline B, Lindsay Caldicott and others
Early-20th-century police, medical and prison photographs of confinement, paired with drawings made by art brut artists while imprisoned.
Curated by Marc Donnadieu as part of the bicentennial of photography, the show sets late-19th- and early-20th-century documentary, medical, police and judicial photographs of identification, arrest and incarceration — in prisons, penal colonies, asylums and internment camps — against drawings made by art brut artists while imprisoned or confined, some made clandestinely and some under supervision.
The works, which often depict the architecture of confinement itself or unexpected forms of self-representation, set power against counter-power; the project is dedicated to Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Michel Foucault, Chris Marker and Éric Rondepierre.
