Twenty new oil paintings crowded with living and ghostly figures, drawn from Southern Gothic memory, art history and New York streets.

Ellis begins each canvas by pouring and scraping oil paint in abstract gestures, letting chance suggest the churning water or landscape that anchors the scene. Onto these grounds she paints mermaids, spirits, skull-faced diners, Citi Bike riders and a reworking of Géricault’s Raft of the Medusa, where beauty and grotesque slip into each other.

The title comes from Moby-Dick. It is Ellis’s fourth solo show at the gallery and her first since 2023.
