Meeson PaeSeed Memory
New oil paintings of invented flower, fungus and seedpod forms, with ceramic, cast metal and plaster sculptures.
Pae paints imagined organisms that read as flowers, fungi or seedpods, set in dark, atmospheric landscapes recalling nineteenth-century Romantic and Symbolist painting. The works draw on her visits to Jeju, South Korea, where her family originates, and on the island’s volcanic terrain, plants and coastal ecology.
Sculptures in ceramic, cast metal and plaster, some on lily-pad-shaped stainless steel platforms, extend the paintings into a more tactile vocabulary. It is her second solo show with the gallery and first in New York.
