Jan van EyckVan Eyck: The Portraits
All nine of Jan van Eyck’s known painted portraits, lent from across Europe and shown together.
The nine surviving portraits make up half of van Eyck’s known paintings, and this is the first time they have been gathered in one place. The show looks at the people he painted: craftsmen, merchants and his own relatives rather than royalty or aristocrats.
It dwells on the fine detail of faces, from stubble and wrinkles to flushed cheeks, and is accompanied by a catalogue with new research on his technique.
