Catharina van HemessenSignature Works
Small-scale paintings by the 16th-century Antwerp artist Catharina van Hemessen, who signed and dated her works.
The first UK exhibition devoted to van Hemessen brings together small, finely painted pictures by a Flemish Renaissance artist who put her name on her work at a time when few women were painters. Her 1551 portrait, inscribed with her name and the year, is the starting point.
She is the only 16th-century Flemish woman painter known to have signed her paintings. The show is organised with the Museum Snijders&Rockoxhuis in Antwerp and is free to visit.
