The Mayor Gallery

Oct 6 – 23, 2026 St James's

Closing soon

Five Pop paintings and a sewn-canvas piece by four women artists, from 1961 to 2004.

The gallery shows five works by four artists who shaped Pop Art, each shown here before the current reappraisal: Boty in 1998 and Axell in 2003. Axell’s Érotomobile II (1965) turns the car into a vehicle for female desire. Two Boty paintings, an abstraction of 1961 and Sunflower Woman of 1963, mark her move to the imagery of magazines and film.

Dunkley’s Untitled (1970) comes from the short series behind Grief, now in the Tate collection, based on press photographs of the Kennedy assassinations. Haworth’s String Crazy Hired Man II (2004) uses sewn canvas and craft materials. The works hang in the lower gallery and can be viewed on request.
