Caryn ScrimgeourA Certain Slant of Light
New still-life paintings of laid tables, porcelain, butterflies, birds and small keepsakes, in the manner of Dutch vanitas.
Scrimgeour paints immaculate table settings in which precious keepsakes sit beside everyday objects: embroidered cloths, porcelain, pinned wings, torn paper, tangled thread. Low, oblique light picks out each one, and the only human trace is her faint reflection in a spoon or fish knife.
The works draw on Dutch Golden Age still life and on classical Chinese and Japanese poetry, using ephemeral things such as petals, butterflies and a fig to reflect on transience and on what we hold onto.
