Sky GlabushIf the wild bird could speak
Large oil paintings of lakes, forests, dense vegetation and sunflower fields, plus smaller works, by the Canadian painter.
Glabush builds his paintings from long observation of forests, fields, gardens and changing light. Each begins with a recognisable image that breaks down and re-forms as he works intuitively, letting the materials steer the result. He often mixes sand into the oil paint, giving the surfaces a tactile, relief-like quality.
The show is the first at the gallery since it announced representation of the artist earlier this year. Modernist painting, the Emma Lake Artists’ Workshops of his Saskatchewan upbringing and poetry by Dickinson, Hughes, Heaney and Purdy all inform the work.
