Drawings that rework racist image motifs with humor and irony to question how Black and Indigenous people in Mexico are seen.
Peña, an Afro-Indigenous artist from Oaxaca, draws on imagery known from racist depictions, exaggerating and distorting it to expose how such images shape ideas of belonging and identity. Humor and irony reveal the contradictions in these attributions and their long afterlife.
The small cabinet show runs in dialogue with the gallery’s Eva Frankfurther exhibition, adding a contemporary view: where Frankfurther looks at people as individuals, Peña examines the image traditions that categorize them.
