Hugo WilsonThe Unclean Slate

Large abstract works on paper, small animal paintings drawn from Instagram suggestions, and ceramic and bronze sculptures.

Wilson’s large abstract drawings layer graphite, ink and oil, built from an archive of Old Master fragments, his own photographs and images from contemporary visual culture. One work for the first time merges drawing and oil painting. Alongside them are detailed animal paintings, including a pig, a boar and monkeys, and a series titled Suggested for You, based on images served up by Instagram’s algorithm.

Sculptures combine Chinese scholar’s rocks with hunting-trophy forms. The show is Wilson’s fourth with the gallery and his first at its converted gas station.
