Ersan MondtagDispair
Sep 10 – Oct 31, 2026 Mitte
New sculptures in charred wood and reliefs in wood and silicone about loneliness, desire and community, in Mondtag’s first solo show with the gallery.
Made for the show, Mondtag’s carbonized-wood figures, some life-size, mix Art Nouveau with body horror; one shows an old man kneeling before a young man on a throne. The relief Die Lebenssüchtigen (2026) answers Ferdinand Hodler’s 1892 painting Tired of Life, and Totentanz is a ten-minute sound piece played through a silicone ear.
The works draw on the private chemsex parties of gay men and the isolation behind them. Mondtag, born in 1987, is a theater and opera director who represented Germany with Yael Bartana at the 2024 Venice Biennale.
