A survey of Cesar Klein’s paintings, graphics, stage designs, mosaics, glass windows, furniture and porcelain, for his 150th birthday.
Cesar Klein (1876–1954) moved between fine and applied art: painter, graphic artist, interior designer, and stage and film designer in Weimar-era Berlin. A founding member of the Neue Secession in 1910, he declined a call to the Bauhaus in 1919 and taught decorative painting at the Kunstgewerbemuseum’s school.
Banned from painting and labelled “degenerate” under the Nazis, he kept working only in stage design, then returned to painting after 1945. This is his first monographic show in Berlin; a rebuilt stage set and a catalogue accompany it.
