## Exhibitions

### Dewey Crumpler: *Sonic Lineages*

Sep 30, 2026 – May 30, 2027 · on view · All 3 floors

Paintings from more than five decades and new kinetic works by the Bay Area painter and muralist.

Crumpler’s first major museum survey spans more than five decades, hanging paintings from different periods side by side with newly commissioned kinetic works. Shipping containers, hooded figures, voids and metallic surfaces recur as he explores Black consciousness, commerce, spirituality and time.

Born in Arkansas in 1949, Crumpler began as a San Francisco muralist, studying under Pablo Esteban O’Higgins and David Alfaro Siqueiros, and later taught painting at the San Francisco Art Institute.

### *After the Island: Ornament and Ceramic Practice in the Jamaican Diaspora*

Group exhibition · Sep 30, 2026 – May 30, 2027 · on view · Floor 3

Ceramics by PJ Anderson, Jacqueline Bishop and Sharon Norwood on Jamaican heritage and migration.

The three artists each have a different tie to Jamaica, and they use ornament and pattern on clay to deal with memory and colonial history. Anderson makes burnished, smoke-fired forms. Bishop adds collage to porcelain plates. Norwood’s sculptures repeat a curly line.

MoAD organized the show with the Black Artists’ Network in Dialogue and the Gardiner Museum, both in Toronto.

### Dorian Reid: *Calling All Cats!*

Sep 30 – Dec 6, 2026 · on view · Floor 2: CommonSpirit Health Gallery

Ceramics, paintings, textiles and protest signs centered on the Berkeley artist’s black-cat club.

Reid is a MoAD Emerging Artist. She shows the black cat as a symbol of dignity and humor instead of bad luck, and the show tells the story of the Black Cat Revolution, a club she started in 2024 that raises money for cats and for people in her community.

Reid grew up in Berkeley. She is the daughter of the historian Betty Reid Soskin, and her family ran Reid’s Records. Her family and its links to the Black Panthers come up throughout the work.
