Friedlander has photographed Maria since the 1950s, and this selection follows the couple through marriage, parenthood and old age: Maria reading, driving, on the phone, lying in the sun. The pictures also record how his own way of seeing changed, with his shadow sometimes falling into the frame. A new hardcover book accompanies the show. Well-known photographs by Adams are paired with the contact sheets they were chosen from, each sheet holding all the frames from one roll of medium-format film. Shown for the first time, the sheets reveal how many tries lay behind his spare, exact pictures of clouds, trees and roads. Fraenkel Gallery publishes a new monograph with the show.
