Mary LaiHighly Likely, Maybe Not
New textured acrylic paintings on canvas about the space between doubt and belief.
Lai builds her paintings from layers of acrylic paint and paste, with rhythmic, raked patterns like those of a Zen garden. Shapes appear, shift and return, suggesting a journey still underway, with a light irony about how readily possibility turns into certainty.
The show asks how much of our confidence rests on what we know and how much on what we choose to believe. Lai is a Korean-American artist based in Los Angeles who also works in murals, illustration and sculpture.
