# *Superficial Matters: Artists from the Svane Gift and Beyond* Group exhibition · Aug 15, 2026 – Apr 11, 2027 · on view Eight artists, among them Lorna Simpson, Ruby Neri and Stephanie Syjuco, take on surface, ornament and the way women are pictured. Eight artists challenge the idea that surface is shallow, a judgment long tied to women, in the third show drawn from 42 works by Bay Area artists that the museums bought with a gift from the Svane Family Foundation. Works include Lorna Simpson’s Wigs, lithographs on felt; Ruby Neri’s ceramic sculptures of women; Maria A. Guzmán Capron’s sculptures made from secondhand garments; Stephanie Syjuco’s restaged ethnographic photographs; and paintings by Christiane Lyons and Daisy May Sheff. Wesaam Al-Badry and Sunny A.
