Clarke worked as an artist in residence in New York and California prisons, treating willing participants as collaborators and artists rather than subjects. The tapes gathered here include Prison Love Tapes, in which inmates at a Manhattan jail speak about love; Amen, memories recalled by men in a prison HIV/AIDS unit; One on One, video pen-pal exchanges between inmates and outside collaborators; Videomasks; and Inside Out, diaries by young women at a California youth facility. Though portions have screened before, this marks the first time the body of work has been brought together in exhibition form. Cushion Works will also host a live event with Clarke during the run. Valor photographs San Francisco’s castoffs and incidental moments—dropped food, drought-stricken street plants, cardboard, wires, and people glimpsed on buses and corners—printed mostly at a drugstore in glossy, modestly sized prints. Shot at odd angles and varying focus, the images treat every subject with equal weight, pairing decay with tenderness and humor. The gallery presents the photographs in abundance, as a single dense installation rather than a curated sequence.
