## Exhibitions

### Sandow Birk: *An Illustrated History of the Present*

Aug 29 – Nov 7, 2026 · on view · North and South Galleries

- Thu, Oct 15, 2026: Gallery’s 35th anniversary celebration (details to be announced)

A survey of 35 years of Birk’s painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics and film, filling the whole gallery.

Birk pairs older works from series such as Prisonation, In Smog and Thunder and American Qur’an with new or reworked pieces that answer them. The earliest are two large 1992 paintings made with graffiti artist REALM after the Los Angeles uprising, both revised this year.

The show also debuts new etchings from Birk’s Trumpagruel series, printed with Mullowney Printing in Portland, Oregon.

### Stacey Steers: *The Stars Watch from Long Ago*

Nov 14, 2026 – Jan 2, 2027 · coming up · North Gallery

- Sat, Nov 14, 2026: Opening reception, 2–4 pm

Handmade paper collages and related objects from Steers’s new animated film, in which a tiny farmhouse carries silent-film stars through space.

Steers’s films are built from thousands of small paper collages, with figures taken from printed silent-movie frames and scenery from nineteenth-century engravings; one second of film takes eight collages. The North Gallery shows the originals behind her newest film, a collaboration with the artist John Romano, who edited it.

In the film a farmhouse drifts through space with Lillian Gish aboard, later joined by Janet Gaynor and Ana Torrent, while wildfire, a threat in Steers’s home state of Colorado, runs through the story.

### Julie Heffernan: *Nature Morte*

Nov 14, 2026 – Jan 2, 2027 · coming up · South Gallery

- Sat, Nov 14, 2026: Opening reception (shared with Stacey Steers: The Stars Watch from Long Ago, North Gallery), 2–4 pm

New oil paintings of present-day disasters—wildfires, bombings, a drone strike on an oil refinery—painted in the language of art-historical still life.

The title, French for still life (literally “dead nature”), frames new oil paintings of present-day destruction: wildfires in Los Angeles, explosions and bombings in Iran, Gaza and Venezuela, a Ukrainian drone strike on the Tuapse oil refinery and a tropical island in flames. Heffernan paints each disaster through the conventions of art history.

Based in Brooklyn, she has been represented by the gallery since 2005 and teaches fine arts at Montclair State University.
