## Exhibitions

### Ha Chong-Hyun: *Retrospective*

Sep 25, 2026 – Jan 25, 2027 · on view · Yang Yamazaki Pavilion

More than fifty paintings from six decades, in the Korean abstract painter’s first museum exhibition in North America.

The survey runs from early-1960s canvases built up with thick paint, embedded thread and scorch marks to the Conjunction series, begun in 1974, in which Ha forces oil paint from the back of coarse burlap through to the front. The newest works, two finished in 2025, mix ash and charred material with bright color.

The guest curator is Sunjung Kim of Art Sonje Center in Seoul.

Landscapes by Chinese ink painters, historical and contemporary.

The selection draws on the tradition of mountain worship and on Daoist thought, in which peaks, water and cloud are imagined as a living body. It includes Wang Jian’s Thousand Trees on Azure Peaks in the Style of Dong Yuan, painted in 1668.

Carved, bent and bound wood sculpture by a self-taught Korean woodturner, in his first solo museum exhibition.

He won the 2019 Lexus Creative Masters Award in Seoul and was shortlisted for the 2022 Loewe Foundation Craft Prize.

### Al-An deSouza: *Table Settings*

Apr 9 – Nov 2, 2026 · on view · South Asian Galleries

A watercolor installation on tea-stained grounds, mixing details from the museum’s galleries with the cracks and markings of city sidewalks.

Over months at a living-room table, deSouza began each painting session with a pot of tea, whose leftovers formed the ground for that day’s work. Textures from the museum’s permanent galleries mix with the cracks, stains, signs and bumps the artist photographs on walks through the streets.

The artist, born in 1958, chose watercolor partly because it is so often looked down on, as an amateur’s or a woman’s medium.

### *Vishnu’s Cosmic Ocean*

Oct 23, 2026 – Jan 25, 2027 · coming up · Osher Foundation Gallery

The largest ancient bronze found in Southeast Asia, a colossal reclining Vishnu from Angkor, on the final stop of its international tour.

Nearly twenty feet long when complete, the Vishnu lay in an eleventh-century temple built on an island in a vast reservoir at Angkor. Rediscovered in 1936 and recently conserved, it is on loan from the National Museum of Cambodia; research shows it was once gilded.

Maps, videos and a film by praCh Ly about life around the reservoir today trace the link between water and power in the Khmer kingdom.
