### Tashi Gurung: *Thangka Art*

Dates not published · on view

Traditional Tibetan Buddhist thangka paintings and mandalas by Nepalese artist Tashi Gurung, made with hand-ground mineral pigments.

Tashi Gurung, a thangka painter from the once-forbidden Mustang Kingdom of Nepal, depicts Buddhist deities, mandalas and scenes from the life of the Buddha on prepared cotton canvas, grinding mineral pigments such as lapis lazuli, cinnabar and malachite by hand and sometimes adding 24-carat gold. Subjects shown include the Wheel of Life, the Kalachakra Mandala, the Thousand Buddhas and a medicine thangka.

In 1999 Gurung helped restore 500-year-old Buddhist murals in Mustang’s monasteries, work later featured in the NOVA documentary Lost Treasures of Tibet.

### Yowsaku Sekino: *Hanakotoba: The Language of Flowers*

Oct 2 – Nov 1, 2026 · on view

- Thu, Oct 29, 2026: Gallery talk, 6:30 pm
- Sat, Oct 31, 2026: Gallery talk, 2 pm

Gold-leaf woodblock prints of flowers, vases and landscapes by the Tokyo printmaker, each flower tied to its meaning in Japanese tradition.

The show takes hanakotoba, the Japanese language of flowers, as its frame. Sekino’s prints of cherry blossoms, pansies, sunflowers, peonies, roses and daffodils each carry a symbolic meaning, from fleeting beauty to devotion and love.

He draws, carves and prints every work himself, using hard cherry wood blocks and layering ten or more impressions in water-based ink. Gold leaf pressed into wet ink gives the outlines and backgrounds. A single print takes about three months. Sekino is the son of the sōsaku-hanga printmaker Jun’ichirō Sekino.
