The painting is a dense bed of nails driven into a canvas that Uecker (1930–2025) painted white with his bare hands, then split down the middle with an axe, the earliest known use of that gesture in his work. As light moves across it, the nails cast shifting shadows, so the piece also records the passing of time. With it are 22 photographs by the Swiss photographer Rolf Schröter, who documented the painting’s making in Uecker’s studio. Uecker painted over or perforated each print, so every one is unique. New portraits, landscapes and flower paintings, made in the first half of 2026 in muted, wintry colors. Sitters range from Casteel’s family and friends to strangers; there is a new picture from her Subway Series and one of her carrying her newborn son, and the title plays on “sun” and “son”. Several flower paintings were made in her Hudson Valley garden, and larger still lifes deal with memory and mourning. A catalog with an essay by Amandine Nana, a curator at the Palais de Tokyo, accompanies the show. A survey of Penn’s portraiture across his career, from an early, stark picture of Marcel Duchamp to a photograph of Elizabeth Peyton taken in his final decade. Sitters include John Cage bent over a piano, a 79-year-old Willem de Kooning, and Pablo Picasso, whom Penn photographed in a tightly cropped, single-eyed close-up after being granted only ten minutes at his home in Cannes. It runs alongside two other Penn shows in Paris this season, at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie and the Bourse de Commerce–Pinault Collection.
