## Exhibitions

### *L’Eau primordiale. Leçons de Mésopotamie*

Group exhibition · May 20, 2026 – Mar 15, 2027 · on view · Richelieu wing, room 230, and the Near Eastern Antiquities galleries

Antiquities from the Louvre’s own Near Eastern collection, read for what ancient Mesopotamia’s first canals and irrigation can teach about water today.

Set in room 230 of the Richelieu wing and running through the Near Eastern Antiquities galleries, the show draws only on the Louvre’s holdings. Mesopotamia, crossed by the Tigris and Euphrates and a likely source of the flood myth, is where irrigation was first developed, with the earliest known canals, bridges, aqueducts and artificial lakes.

It weighs the long-term gains and harms those works brought to the land and its people. Curated by Ariane Thomas, director of the department, with Barbara Couturaud and Grégoire Nicolet.

### *Affinités. Les merveilles des arts de l’Islam aux Objets d’art*

Group exhibition · Jun 24 – Dec 6, 2026 · on view · Decorative Arts, Richelieu wing, rooms 502–519

About fifty objects from the Louvre’s Islamic art department, made between the ninth and seventeenth centuries, set among the European decorative arts galleries.

With the Islamic art galleries closed for renovation, some of their major pieces move into the Decorative Arts rooms, where Islamic art was shown for over a century. Carved gems, ivories, lusterware, inlaid metal and enameled glass are grouped around three themes: light, color and sculpture.

The route traces technical inventions in Islamic lands and the fascination they held for Europe, where such objects traveled from the Middle Ages on and shaped local design. Curated by Annabelle Collinet and Philippe Malgouyres.

### *La donation Michel Lacoste au musée du Louvre. Orfèvrerie française de Mangot à Puiforcat*

Group exhibition · Jun 26, 2026 – Jan 11, 2027 · on view · Decorative Arts, room 605

Claude II Ballin, François-Thomas Germain, Nicolas Delaunay and others

One hundred pieces of French silver, mostly from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, a recent gift from the collector Michel Lacoste.

Given to the Louvre in November 2025, the hundred works are about a quarter of the collection Lacoste has built since the 2000s: one from the sixteenth century, 22 from the seventeenth, 76 from the eighteenth and one from the twentieth.

They are shown together in room 605 beside the museum’s own silver and ceramics, bringing in goldsmiths new to the Louvre, such as Jean-Baptiste Chéret and Pierre-François Bonnestrenne, alongside masters like Claude II Ballin and François-Thomas Germain. Curated by Anne Foray-Carlier.

### Kader Attia and Elizabeth Peyton: *Les Hôtes du Louvre. Kader Attia et Elizabeth Peyton*

Sep 24 – Dec 14, 2026 · on view · Sully wing, Salle de la Chapelle

A film, an installation, paintings and drawings by Kader Attia and Elizabeth Peyton, the fruit of two years with studios inside the Louvre.

From 2024 to summer 2026 both artists kept studios in the museum, working alongside its staff and among its visitors; they now share the Salle de la Chapelle.

Attia (born 1970 in Dugny) shows a film and an installation drawn from his own long acquaintance with the museum and the act of looking. Peyton (born 1965 in Connecticut) shows paintings and drawings after Louvre works she has studied since youth, beside portraits made in her palace studio. Organized with the artists by Donatien Grau and Nicolas Marbeau.

### Francisco de Zurbarán: *Zurbarán 1598–1664*

Oct 7, 2026 – Jan 25, 2027 · on view, just opened · Hall Napoléon

A retrospective of the Spanish Golden Age painter, from his monumental monastic commissions in Andalusia to his portraits and still lifes.

Organized with the National Gallery, London, and the Art Institute of Chicago, the show is a choice of major paintings rather than a full catalogue, in seven sections that loosely follow his long career. Large canvases made for Andalusian monasteries are at its center, with room for the brief output of his son Juan de Zurbarán (1620–1649).

An epilogue traces his pull on the French avant-garde through Manet, Picasso and Juan Gris. It shares its space and ticket with Sculpter la couleur. Curated by Charlotte Chastel-Rousseau.

Group exhibition · Oct 7, 2026 – Jan 25, 2027 · on view, just opened · Hall Napoléon

Gregorio Fernández, Alonso Cano, Pedro de Mena, Luisa Roldán and others

Painted wooden religious sculpture from seventeenth-century Spain, lent by Valladolid’s national sculpture museum and shown beside the Zurbarán retrospective.

The centerpiece is a complete processional paso by Gregorio Fernández, five life-size painted figures from the early 1600s, shown at eye level. His life-size Cristo de la Luz and Alonso Cano’s Saint John the Baptist are among the loans never before seen in France.

Sections cover relics and saints, dressed statues, the Passion, private devotion and the Immaculate Conception, with work by Pedro de Mena, Luisa Roldán and other sculptors from Castile and Andalusia.

Pictures come from the Louvre’s own photographic holdings and from French archives and museums, over a period that takes in the Commune, the wartime evacuations of the collections and the Grand Louvre works of the 1980s. Prints by Pierre Jahan, the Neurdein brothers, Auguste Léon and Barbara Klemm hang alongside work the museum has commissioned since the early 2000s, including Robert Polidori’s.
