## Exhibitions

### Auguste Bartholdi: *La Liberté éclairant le monde*

Sep 15, 2026 – Jan 31, 2027 · on view · Room 69, Level 2

- Fri, Nov 6, 2026: Inaugural lecture by the curators, 12:30 pm

The career of the sculptor Auguste Bartholdi and the making of the Statue of Liberty, from the first idea to its 1886 unveiling in New York.

Organized with the Musée Bartholdi in Colmar, the show follows the Alsatian sculptor from his early monumental projects to the statue that the jurist Édouard Laboulaye proposed as a French gift to the United States. It covers the fundraising campaign on both sides of the Atlantic, the full-size pieces shown at the 1876 and 1878 world’s fairs, and the engineering of Viollet-le-Duc and then Gustave Eiffel.

Curated by François Blanchetière and Juliette Chevée.

### *Une Statue pour la liberté, le rêve de Bartholdi, de Paris à New York*

Sep 15, 2026 – Jan 31, 2027 · on view · Level 0, Galerie Amont

A virtual-reality walk through the making of the Statue of Liberty, from Bartholdi’s first sketches to its arrival in New York Harbor.

With headsets on, visitors move through nearly 700 square meters of the Galerie Amont, following Bartholdi from the salon of Édouard Laboulaye to the Philadelphia world’s fair and the Gaget, Gauthier & Cie workshop, reconstructed for the first time with its hundreds of workers. The sets are painted directly in virtual space rather than rendered photorealistically.

Produced by GEDEON Experiences with BackLight, the museum and VIVE Arts, as a companion to the Bartholdi exhibition; recommended from age 13.

### Claude Monet: *« Je passe ma vie à peindre »*

Sep 30, 2026 – Jan 24, 2027 · on view · Rooms 29–35

Fifty Monet paintings from the museum’s own collection, rehung through six rooms of the Impressionist galleries for the centenary of his death.

The new route follows Monet’s career from the mid-1860s to the early 1900s with two-thirds of the museum’s 76 Monets. Five focus displays share findings from recent restorations and laboratory studies with the Centre de recherche et de restauration des musées de France, among them La Pie (1868–69).

They show a painter wrestling with concrete problems, such as a snow scene, a huge canvas painted outdoors or a river thawing fast, and working less spontaneously than he appears to.

### Marie Bracquemond: *Les muses des arts*

Studies by Marie Bracquemond for Les Muses des Arts, her large painted earthenware panel shown at the 1878 Paris world’s fair.

A small display on Marie Bracquemond’s work in the decorative arts, built around a series of studies for her big faience panel painted in slip, shown at the Exposition Universelle of 1878. It draws on the nearly 200 paintings and drawings by Marie and Félix Bracquemond given to the museum by the couple’s descendants in 2024.

### Mary Cassatt: *L’indépendante*

Oct 6, 2026 – Jan 31, 2027 · on view

- Fri, Oct 16, 2026: Inaugural lecture by the curators, 12:30 pm

Nearly 80 paintings, pastels and prints spanning Mary Cassatt’s career, the first major show of her work in a French national museum.

Marking the centenary of her death, the show follows Cassatt from early portraits of her family through her scenes of young women at home and at the theater, shown at four Impressionist exhibitions from 1879, to the mother-and-child pictures she became known for. A film digitally restores Modern Woman, her lost 4 × 18 meter mural for the 1893 Chicago world’s fair.

It ends with paintings from the 1915 New York exhibition she organized for women’s suffrage. Organized with the National Portrait Gallery, London, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

### Richard Peduzzi: *Vertige. Richard Peduzzi à Orsay*

Oct 6, 2026 – Jan 17, 2027 · on view

Paintings, drawings, set models and sculpture by the stage designer Richard Peduzzi, arranged around the giant Opéra Garnier models he made for the museum in 1986.

Peduzzi, long the designer for the director Patrice Chéreau, laid out parts of the museum when it opened forty years ago, including the overhead view of the Opéra and its Haussmann-era district at the end of the nave. The show gathers his models for productions such as Berg’s Lulu (1979) and Marlowe’s The Massacre at Paris (1972), with their recurring endless walls, towers and ruins.

Drawings from the collection chosen with him, by Viollet-le-Duc, Hippolyte Le Bas and Gustave Eiffel, point to his sources.

### Jenny Holzer: *J’ai vu*

Oct 20, 2026 – Feb 21, 2027 · coming up

- Sun, Oct 18, 2026: Text projections on the Seine façade, nightly through Oct 22, 7–11 pm

Jenny Holzer’s texts drawn from the museum’s archives and 19th-century writing, in LED displays, metal-leaf paintings, engraved stone benches and façade projections.

Made for the museum, the show threads an LED installation of moving colored text through the domed galleries of history painting, naturalism and symbolism, beside Holzer’s gold, platinum and palladium leaf paintings, whose largely hidden content shifts with the light off the Seine. New stone benches engraved with texts from 1848–1914 stand on the ground floor and in the galleries.

During opening week, texts by Flaubert, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Zola and others are projected on the Seine façade.
