The display marks sixty years since Matsutani settled in France. The museum receives three of his works as a gift, among them Cercle-Cernuschi, made for the museum in 2025–26 from vinyl glue blown and shaped into organic forms, with two earlier Cercle works echoing it. Two 1992 graphite works, Écriture 92-10 and 92-10-1, build up pencil marks to leave white curves, a negative calligraphy related to his Stream series. The title is a Nō theatre term for the bridge between wings and stage, here a metaphor for his link between Japan and the West. Perspective d’argile (2002) is the museum’s annual autumn invitation to a contemporary artist to take over the Buddha room. Shim Moon Seup, born in 1943 in Tongyeong, Korea, shapes clay plates with curves and folds, sometimes to the point of breaking, to bring out the material’s own force. Placed among Han and Tang terracotta tomb figures, the work sets human intervention beside the force of matter in archaeological objects. It is shown for the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and Korea.
