Timed to a book celebrating the magazine’s hundred years, the show looks at covers before publication, when they were still works on paper in the studio. Drawings, paintings, studies and variants reveal paths that were sometimes direct, sometimes full of hesitation and change. It is curated by Françoise Mouly, the magazine’s art editor since 1993, and gallery director Rina Zavagli. Thirteen artists are included, among them Sempé, Bruce McCall, Anita Kunz, Adrian Tomine and Richard McGuire.
