The show grows out of Koether’s long fascination with La Chasse spirituelle, a legendary text credited to Arthur Rimbaud whose authorship has never been settled, and marks a return to Paris, a city she works with as material as much as a setting. It brings together a new group of paintings that mix images, writing and references to earlier art. Mauss continues a practice that connects painting, gesture, memory and display with writing and performance, without ranking one medium above another. The show centers on mirrors painted on the reverse and folded into closed volumes, which reflect narrow slivers of the room and of social performance. They sit with silk-velvet works, etched and double-dyed so that figures and painted marks are chemically removed from the fabric, and wall-mounted hollow heads in sheet aluminum, formed as fragile negative molds of enlarged 1920s heads by the designer Eyre de Lanux.
