Ibrahim Said hand-builds earthenware vessels into top-heavy, gravity-defying forms with coiled, tentacle-like legs, their surfaces carved with geometric patterns drawn from Islamic architecture and the hidden filter designs of Fatimid-era Egyptian jugs. Many are finished in a burnished black glaze recalling Naqada-period pottery from ancient Egypt. Raised in Cairo’s pottery district of Al Fustat, where he learned the craft from his father, Said now has work held by the Brooklyn Museum, the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum, among other institutions.
