Knop’s third solo show with the gallery turns wholly to landscape: mountains, trees and flowing water, with the human figures that often appeared in his earlier work removed. Made over a year, the eleven paintings combine oil, acrylic, ink, oil stick, pastel, crayon and pencil, and take shape through improvisation and accepted mistakes rather than a fixed plan. The title borrows from Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, which Knop often played on vinyl in the studio while painting. Ibrahim Said hand-builds earthenware vessels into top-heavy, gravity-defying forms with coiled, tentacle-like legs, their surfaces carved with geometric patterns drawn from Islamic architecture and the hidden filter designs of Fatimid-era Egyptian jugs. Many are finished in a burnished black glaze recalling Naqada-period pottery from ancient Egypt. Raised in Cairo’s pottery district of Al Fustat, where he learned the craft from his father, Said now has work held by the Brooklyn Museum, the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum, among other institutions.
