Hamilton shows leather-covered, hand-carved pumpkins, two red boots inlaid with thousands of eggshell fragments, leg chairs clad in tiny bricks or based on Gaetano Pesce’s Airport Lamp, and fabric butterflies of species found in New York, set among historical Art Nouveau objects. Two related shows fill the townhouse’s other floors: her selection from Pesce’s archive below, and new work from the Pesce studio above. Hamilton, who has studied Pesce’s work since finding a book on him as a student in 2009, sets well-known pieces such as UP7 (1969), Tramonto a New York (1980) and the Golgotha table (1972) beside original drawings, material studies, prototypes and proposals, most of them from his archive. Pesce’s longtime studio managers Alessandro Byther and Giulia Tosciri still work in the workshop, which goes on realizing his designs by hand in poured, folded and molded resin, no two pieces alike. The show fills the third floor, above Anthea Hamilton’s solo show and her selection from Pesce’s archive. Davis casts the bodies of friends, muses and models to make new life-size nude sculptures, arranged in tableaux that draw on mythology, theater and art from antiquity to today. The show takes on the classical nude and the long absence of the Black figure from the Western canon. Nkoth’s first major solo show in New York brings a new series of paintings of dancers, figures caught mid-exchange and clusters of profiles, their poses somewhere between stage performance and private moments. Ballet and migration run through the work, which considers how discipline, adaptation and memory are carried in the body.
