Begum’s first solo show in New York brings works from her Reflector, Louvre and Chainlink series. The Louvre pieces, in metal, stone and glass, take their form from the slatted louvers of vents, façades and blinds; hung on the wall or suspended, the works change with the light and the viewer’s position. Born in Bangladesh in 1977, Begum lives in London; her work draws on geometric abstraction and Islamic pattern. The show centers on three paintings drawn from photographs Rawles took of her youngest daughter in a pool. She moved around the girl in the water, so each image records nearly the same instant from a different angle and distance, and each becomes a very different composition. The works continue her blend of hyperrealism and abstraction, using water, light and movement to make spaces that read as both intimate and expansive. They are titled Call Me Back, Axis of Paradise and The Geometry of Origins. The new works continue Pittman’s dense, decorative style, mixing city views and street signs with textile patterns, storybook and dream imagery, and words in several languages addressed to the viewer. Born in Los Angeles in 1952, Pittman spent much of his childhood in Colombia, his mother’s home country. His embrace of craft and ornament grew partly from his years at CalArts in the 1970s, where a feminist art program challenged the low standing of the decorative arts. The show sets Vicuña’s new pieces beside Carrington’s historical paintings and drawings, including a 1954 preliminary drawing for Rueda de los caballos. Both artists draw on myth, ritual and poetry, and on transformation as a way to question fixed ideas of the world. Vicuña met Carrington in 1969, an encounter that gave her a new method of painting. Organized with Gallery Wendi Norris, the show travels to San Francisco in January 2027.
