## Exhibitions

### *A Living Vision: the Sorolla Gallery at 100*

May 21, 2026 – May 27, 2027 · on view · Audubon Terrace (outdoor kiosks)

Photographs, reproduced sketches and letter excerpts tracing how Sorolla’s mural cycle Vision of Spain was made and installed in 1926.

Marking the centennial of the installation of Joaquín Sorolla’s mural series Vision of Spain, this outdoor kiosk show on Audubon Terrace tells the story behind one of the Hispanic Society’s most famous works. Rare photographs, reproductions of Sorolla’s preparatory sketches and excerpts from his letters trace the demanding process of completing and installing the murals.

It is curated by associate curator Noemí Espinosa, with a series of curator talks on the murals during its run.

### Tom Sanford: *Uptown Visions*

Jul 1 – Nov 1, 2026 · on view · Audubon Terrace (outdoors)

An outdoor work on Audubon Terrace by Harlem-based painter Tom Sanford, picturing summer street life in Upper Manhattan, from music to pickup basketball.

Commissioned for Audubon Terrace through the Hispanic Society’s partnership with the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance, the work draws on Sanford’s own life as a Harlem resident, rendering the games, music and crowds of Uptown summers in his bold, pop-inflected style.

The piece also answers Joaquín Sorolla’s Vision of Spain murals inside the museum, timed to the hundredth anniversary of their installation, casting contemporary Upper Manhattan as a counterpart to Sorolla’s scenes of Spanish life. It is the fourth commission in the Art on Audubon Terrace series, following past artists Marta Chilindron, Rose Deler and Oscar Caballero.

### *A Collection without Borders*

Group exhibition · Jul 23 – Nov 1, 2026 · on view · Main Court

Paintings, portraits and decorative objects from Spain, Portugal, Latin America, Goa and the Philippines, drawn from the museum’s own collection.

The museum’s yearly collection show fills its Main Court, a terracotta re-creation of a sixteenth-century Spanish Renaissance courtyard. Paintings of the 1500s to the 1900s, from religious figures and portraits to a few abstract works, line the arcade, and cases in the middle of the court hold objects from Spain, Portugal, Mexico, South America and Asia.

Many were acquired by founder Archer Milton Huntington early in the twentieth century, others bought or given since his death in 1955; some are on view for the first time in decades.

### Esperanza Cortés: *Embroidered Allegories*

Sep 3 – Nov 1, 2026 · on view

- Thu, Oct 15, 2026: Artist talk with Esperanza Cortés, 6 pm

New work by Colombian-born artist Esperanza Cortés, made during a research fellowship in the Hispanic Society’s collection, on heritage and colonial history.

Cortés, a Colombian-born artist who works in painting, sculpture, installation and video, developed the pieces as a Vilcek Foundation Artist Research Fellow at the museum. Her sources range across the collection, from Velázquez and Goya to metalwork and the embroidered shawls known as mantones de Manila, and she sets personal stories of triumph and loss against questions of heritage and colonial history.

It is the third show in Arte en el Alto Manhattan, the museum’s yearly series for artists who live or work uptown.

### *Mantilla: Fashion Unveiled*

Nov 20, 2026 – Mar 28, 2027 · coming up

Paintings, textiles, photographs, books and contemporary fashion tracing the history of the Spanish lace mantilla.

The show follows the mantilla, the lace veil worn with a comb called a peineta, from its 16th-century origins to the present. It looks at how the garment moved from a emblem of tradition and femininity to a vehicle for identity and artistic experiment, through historical and contemporary works.

It is the second part of the museum’s multi-year fashion initiative, following Spanish Style: Fashion Illuminated, 1550–1700.
