The first New York show of Arp’s work in nearly fifteen years centers on the Threshold sculptures of his last decade, which carry his cut-paper method into space: flat, open forms that change as a visitor walks around them. Among them is Heads or Tails (1959), which names the show. Rarely shown works on paper, including Diptychs and watercolors from the 1960s, and bronzes shown in the round surround them, in a display modeled on his studio in Locarno. Floating in the ground-floor gallery is Willing To Be Vulnerable—Metalized Balloon (2015–2016/2020), a zeppelin-like balloon of fabric and PET film. Around it are new paintings from the Velvet series, which layer photographs of her own sculptures, studio scraps and cut mother-of-pearl on silk velvet; new Perdu works, with mother-of-pearl set in layers of sanded acrylic; and new sculptures. Rouy repeats figures, faces and compositions across canvases, sometimes showing the same body twice in one picture. The new Procession series, in faded reds and earth tones, shows larger-than-life figures being carried, drawing on the pietà and the deposition of Christ; the Phantom paintings, in silver, graphite and charcoal, let bodies dissolve; and the small Unknown paintings portray fake faces made for bot accounts. It follows a first part at Hannah Barry Gallery this summer.
