In Edge Control, a series begun in 2023, Lawson reworks the security-camera stills of alleged shoplifters that beauty supply stores across the United States tape to their windows and doors, altering them only to hide the identities of the people shown. The series is named after one of the most often stolen products, a gel for smoothing the baby hairs along the hairline. The blue-green images are framed in glowing black mirror. The wall pieces share one size, 56 by 88 inches: hand-polished aluminum fitted with aluminum spikes and a photograph printed on aluminum, under automotive clearcoat. The pictures, found online or in personal and academic archives, touch on art history and popular culture; two reproduce Renoir’s 1879 portrait of Marguerite-Thérèse Berard and Robert Mapplethorpe’s Tulip (1984). A polished aluminum floor sculpture is also on view. Curtiss paints stylized figures whose faces stay hidden, using cropped views of isolated body parts to build scenes of observation and sly humor. Set around New York interiors, shops and streets, the works take up identity, gender and aging, with a pervading sense that nothing can be trusted as real. In Makeover (2026), two women seen from behind wear fur coats, sunglasses and postoperative compression masks. This is the gallery’s first presentation of her work in New York. Curated by Richard Calvocoressi to the artist’s own design, the show gathers Baselitz’s last paintings and two late sculptures, among them his last, Strawinsky (2026). Two paintings never shown before, Meine Schule, die Jungs and Meine Schule, die Mädchen, return to his earliest memory: pupils standing in front of a Nazi banner on the Deutschbaselitz school where his father taught.
