Hobbie paints her figures with flawless, brushless finish, producing only about four canvases a year. Pattern, drawn from Ukiyo-e, New Objectivity and textiles, has long shielded her women; here the nude becomes a sustained subject for the first time, and crease, contour and fold take over the work that clothing once did. Owls and butterflies recur, and several paintings add gold leaf, moving toward emblem, allegory and icon. Titles such as Memento Mori and Wingspan point to mortality, transformation and myth. Mattax’s three 2026 canvases are made by dragging, scraping and rebuilding the surface with oil, oil stick and pencil. The paintings mark a change in his practice: as forms multiply, the work moves from accumulation toward a denser, more intricate structure within the abstraction itself.
