## Exhibitions

### *Octopus & Others: Acts of Collaboration & Poetics*

Group exhibition · Aug 6 – Nov 15, 2026 · on view

Panels from Papo Colo’s Octopus, a 1982 accordion book in plywood made with New York poets and artists, alongside other works that rethink the book.

In 1982 Papo Colo staged Octopus: An Act of Sculpture in the museum’s courtyard, a folding outdoor book of eight-by-four-foot plywood panels whose pages were made on site by poets and artists he invited, among them Pedro Pietri, Vito Acconci and Tehching Hsieh. Panels Colo recently gave to the museum are shown for the first time in more than forty years.

Collection works, archival material and loans by artists and poets of several generations show the book turned to social, political and environmental ends. Zuna Maza is the curator.

### Teddy Sandoval: *Teddy Sandoval and the Butch Gardens School of Art*

Sep 10, 2026 – Jan 10, 2027 · on view

The first museum retrospective of Los Angeles artist Teddy Sandoval (1949–1995), whose prints, drawings and mail art played with codes of gender and masculinity.

A central figure in Los Angeles’s queer and Chicanx art circles, Sandoval made prints, drawings, mail art and photocopies, many featuring his signature faceless man, often with a mustache. The title borrows the name of Butch Gardens, an early-1970s gay bar, which he turned into a one-member “school of art” for circulating work and staging shows.

Work by other queer, Latinx and Latin American artists, including Marisol, Marta Minujín, Martin Wong and Joey Terrill, hangs alongside his. The touring show is curated by C. Ondine Chavoya and David Evans Frantz.
