Reeder’s dogs sip white wine on a veranda in the south of France or surf the web late at night, and in a restaging of Matisse’s Interior with Etruscan Vase (1940) a dog in glasses looks like the painter himself. List paintings such as Weed Names and a to-do list for an unmade abstract painting hang among abstractions collaged with drawings from his studio walls and floor. It is his second show with the gallery. Reeder’s scenes belong to no fixed era: figures in spandex bodysuits pose and play instruments, cars speed through fluorescent coral reefs and escalators climb through deserted malls. Glitter, pom-poms, thumbprints and the imprint of peeled corrugated cardboard turn up on the surfaces. The paintings look to Pattern and Decoration, Florine Stettheimer and 1980s graphic design, and grow from his constant drawing on note cards, some of which are shown too.
