Safa, a French-Lebanese painter based near Paris, draws on time spent around the Mediterranean: studying Italian churches, returning to her family’s city of Beirut and working in her French studio. Her husband, her pet and the view from her window recur, ringed by rainbows and crowned with sunflowers. The title, French for “nuptials,” comes from Albert Camus’s early writing on the summer, sea and sun of Algiers. Painted wet-on-wet, Yuan’s scenes of public baths and hot springs in decay, with drained pools, cracked tile and overgrown branches, seem to melt back into color up close. Clack-Clack sets a vintage Western beach scene as a mosaic inside an empty bathhouse; the triptych Driftscape adds pines after old Chinese ink painting. In Slip, sea creatures from a wet market tumble through a composition borrowed from Bruegel’s The Fall of the Rebel Angels (1562). Buren’s reliefs of aluminum prisms and mirrored panels in bold colors rise nearly eight feet and jut from the wall into the room, their mirrors catching parts of the space a viewer is not facing. Kasten built temporary arrangements of mirrors, screens, plexiglass and geometric solids in her studio and photographed them on Polaroid, flattening them into images where depth and scale are hard to read; the sets were then taken apart. The third annual Campus takes over the former Ockawamick School in Hudson, New York. Eight UK galleries join the six founding galleries, and each has invited artists to make a full-room installation that responds to the building’s architecture and history rather than to a set theme. The show pays particular attention to the passages between rooms, so each installation reads as a self-contained environment. Participants include Hurvin Anderson, Ibrahim El-Salahi, Keith Haring, Sarah Lucas, Tony Oursler and Tschabalala Self. It is open Saturdays and Sundays, 12–5 pm.
