Maggi’s eleventh solo show in New York continues his abstract vocabulary of linear pathways recalling circuit boards, aerial views, genetic diagrams and nervous systems, treating pure abstraction as a form of cultural criticism. The works are made on unlikely supports: graphite pencil on the smooth side of aluminum foil, hand-drawn lines on Yupo paper, a McIntosh apple sliced along its axis, an altered ping-pong ball, and Dibond panels inset with tiny fragments of acid-free paper. An accompanying text by the artist frames the work around the idea of a chronic, even pleasurable, state of perplexity.
