# Adam Sorensen: *Thieves*

Recent landscape paintings with lowered horizons and elaborate cloudscapes, in a surreal, invented palette.

Sorensen draws on the Hudson River School, European Romanticism, Japanese ukiyo-e and painters of the American West, joining the Western sublime with Buddhist ideas of impermanence. He lowers the horizon and paints shifting clouds, which the show likens to thieves that take water, color and distance from their surroundings.

High-contrast contours and a fictionalized palette make the familiar landscape strange, asking viewers to see the natural and human worlds as fleeting gifts.
