Pickering and Kim bring painterly figuration to materials and traditions usually tied to abstraction and utility. Working through slow, labor-intensive processes (stitching, sewing and handmade paper pulp), they make repetition both the method and the subject of the work. Memory is held in the materials, and the accumulation of gestures and fibers blurs any clear beginning or end, suggesting cycles of making, transformation, death and renewal.
