The exhibition and sale marks Whitechapel Gallery’s 125th anniversary and raises funds for its future. Twenty-three artists, working with their galleries, show newly commissioned or recent paintings in the Assembly Room, the former Whitechapel Library. The works range from figurative to abstract and treat the image as a space of enquiry, built through surface, material, gesture and time. They invite slow looking rather than quick reading. All are for sale, with proceeds supporting the gallery, the artists and their galleries.
