## Exhibitions

### Cecilia Vicuña: *Living Threads*

Oct 7, 2026 – Feb 14, 2027 · on view, just opened · Galleries 1, 2 and 3

Six decades of Cecilia Vicuña’s textile, painting, photography, installation and film, including the large wool Quipu Menstrual.

The first major UK exhibition of the Chilean artist and poet follows her from the 1960s to now, with works that blur art, poetry, performance and activism. Quipu Menstrual, a dense hanging installation of unspun red and brown wool, sits alongside the one surviving precario from her London years and documentation of 400 lost ones.

London-period paintings, Palabrarmas works and records of public performances are also shown, along with a display on Artists for Democracy, the group she co-founded in 1974, with previously unseen documents and photographs.

### Cecilia Vicuña: *Foraging Quipu*

Oct 7, 2026 – Feb 14, 2027 · on view, just opened · Gallery 4

A participatory installation of plant matter and found objects gathered by local communities, hung as a suspended quipu.

Built from a public call for contributions, the work gathers dry plants and lightweight debris collected by visitors and local communities, then weaves them into a hanging quipu, after the knotted-cord recording system of the ancient Andes. Branches, seeds, roots, fungi, textiles, wood and plastics sit together in it.

First made at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin in 2025, it is recreated here with a new invitation to contribute, and shown alongside Vicuña’s first major UK survey, Living Threads.

### *This Must Be the Place: Artists for Whitechapel Gallery*

Group exhibition · Oct 8 – Nov 8, 2026 · on view, just opened · Assembly Room

Remi Ajani, Andrew Cranston, Nathanaëlle Herbelin, Shiwen, Arisa Yoshioka and others

Paintings by twenty-three international artists, new and recent, shown and sold to mark the gallery’s 125th anniversary.

The exhibition and sale marks Whitechapel Gallery’s 125th anniversary and raises funds for its future. Twenty-three artists, working with their galleries, show newly commissioned or recent paintings in the Assembly Room, the former Whitechapel Library.

The works range from figurative to abstract and treat the image as a space of enquiry, built through surface, material, gesture and time. They invite slow looking rather than quick reading. All are for sale, with proceeds supporting the gallery, the artists and their galleries.

A screening of four artist films, 12 to 24 minutes long, on identity, place, memory and resistance.

The second part of a screening series marking the gallery’s 125th anniversary, it gathers films by four artists linked to its recent history. The works range across documentary, experimental and narrative approaches, looking at personal and collective histories and the politics of belonging.

All four artists have worked with the gallery’s youth collective, Duchamp & Sons, on new collaborative projects through its Participation Programme.
