Jason ThompsonSacred and Ordinary
Union Pacific, Goulston Street
Dates not published Whitechapel
Paintings and assemblages built on pieces of found, weathered wood, their marks copied and reworked over time.
Thompson starts from a small panel of pre-worn wood and lets each work grow outward from it, like a branch from a trunk. The wood’s shape dictates the form, and its existing lines shape the marks that follow.
He makes unplanned marks, then copies, echoes and buries them under more marks; some survive, others are painted over. The image builds up from whatever outlasts its own remaking. Thompson lives in Liverpool and has shown recently in Tokyo, Kyoto and Copenhagen.
